FATMAN D:
MC, promoter, label owner and cheeky DJ on the sly… Fatman D is a man of many talents.
Like a lot of masters of ceremonies, he picked up the mic through pure necessity; eager to get into the game but unable to invest in turntables and tunes at the time, he started putting pen to paper. Mentored by good friend Stevie Hyper D (RIP), those early lyrical scribbles became formidable hype lines that scored Fatman early residencies at two of the most legendary rave brands; One Nation and Helter Skelter.
A versatile host flexing numerous styles – high energy, reggae twist, ragga, double time, rap – his rise to the top was as fast and as furious as the music itself. The late 90s was a golden time for MCs establishing their key role in drum & bass and Fatman secured his place in rave history both as a solo artist and as battle maestro with fellow lyrical luminary Foxy, forming the mighty New Breed outfit. Still a huge force to be reckoned with, New Breed remains one of the most notorious MC/DJ performance outfits as Fatman and Foxy are joined by Majistrate, Rekless, Dazzler, Herbzie, Evil B, Eksman and Shortston.
Firing into the 21st century, Fatman grew from strength to strength adding new stamps to his passport on the roving regular. From Ultrafest Miami to Sunbeatz Ibiza, Fatman’s chiselled a sterling reputation to rouse crowds of thousands on all corners of the globe.
More recently he’s also developed his reputation on the business side of the scene; his label Biological Beats has been a solid platform for the most exciting new producers such as Macky Gee, Jayline, Turno, Dominator and Hizzleguy. With regular rotation from the tastemakers far and wide (Hazard, Hype, Crissy Criss, Logan D, Bailey, Sub Zero, Blackmarket, the list goes on…) Biological Beats comes armed with its own agency, parties and an exciting new sister brand Young Guns.
Investing fully into the next generation, Young Guns sees Fatman making a pledge for the future of drum & bass. Still in its early stages, the brand has already achieved national touring success and is set to follow in Biological Beats’ footsteps as a promising label fully dedicated to tomorrow’s premier league.
Business vibes aside, Fatman remains one of the scene’s most imitable MCs. Resident at Warning, one of the UK’s longest standing D&B events, his lyrical and performance dexterity still carry the same heavyweight impact they did when he first picked up the mic nearly 20 years ago.
Still just as passionate about the party, if not more, there’s just one more thing that gives him the edge… He spends his spare time enjoying a mix on his turntables at home. A rare breed in MC circles, Fatman truly understands the dynamics of DJing, making this man of many talents a true selector’s choice.
NICKY BLACKMARKET:
Nicky Blackmarket is one of the original pioneers of drum and bass, and he is still the most faithful soldier for the scene around the world. His early influences came from his mother’s background in the jazz scene, and it is improvisation and variety that characterises his DJ performances throughout his career. At the start of the eighties, Nicky was 14 and playing electro at youth clubs in London. He played with long-time collaborator Clarky and began to mix all forms of dance music, at house parties and on the radio.Friends FM, run by Mad B. This lead to Nicky joining the ranks of Blackmarket Records in 1990. In 1992, as the house scene moved towards breakbeat, Nicky created a separate department downstairs to cater for the sound that would eventually be called Drum and Bass.In the mid-nineties Nicky pushed the hardcore scene with a regular show on Pulse FM and performances at the Roller Express. He moved into production, making his first record “Spam EP”, along with various remixes and releases on his label Gyroscope, with artists like Ray Keith.
This exposure fuelled his DJ career and Nicky decided to put all his efforts into playing his music around the world.
“…first and foremost I am a DJ.”
As the jungle scene exploded Nicky formed his legendary partnership with the late Stevie Hyper D. These performances are still regarded as the standard by which all others are judged, and MP3s of those sets will probably be on the internet forever.
Blackmarket Records supported the scene as a focus for the community, an essential component in an world without the internet. Nicky started another label “Kartoonz” featuring the anthem “Two Degrees”, confirming his status as a central force in the scene.
Unlike many superstars, Nicky still works in his shop and is a promoter of fresh talent and ideas, unafraid to help new artists and organisers push the artform forward. His love of drum and bass keeps him from descending into the mindless repetition and lazy performances characteristic of many in the scene.
Nicky invites you to sample his philosophy at the shop in D’Arblay St, London, or at any of his shows around the world.
Whooiiiiiiiiiiiikked!
SLAY:
From being at the forefront of the Manchester Grime glory days to establishing himself as one of the most in-demand D&B MCs in the game, Slay has been intrinsic to The Manchester Sound.
Hailing from the era of tape packs, youth club sets and local MC crews, Slay’s emergence into the grime genre wasn’t unusual, but his clarity, intelligent wordplay and signature sound soon set him above many. A member of Manchester’s leading and legendary collective Mayhem Crew, with Shifty, Remdog and others, Slay (or Slayer as he was better known back then) quickly became heard across the UK.
After entering a competition, Mayhem Crew members Slay, Shifty, and his younger cousin Blizzard (who also produced the beat) released ‘We’re Big Like EA’ on Channel U and represented Manchester in a big way.
Slay’s journey into D&B, faster tempos and rave hosting can be accredited organically to collaborations with Manchester DJ and Producer Chimpo’s Box N Lock Label, and family ties with the D&B collective and radio platform Bloc2Bloc.
His presence on the D&B scene soon caught DJ’s and label’s attention. When visiting Outlook Festival in 2019, Slay performed seven sets, despite not being booked! Slay’s performance at the Critical Takeover stage resulted in a relationship with the label and the release of ‘Let it Slide’ with Kasra.
Taking his cool and confident approach to Grime and applying it to D&B may have felt like a natural progression for Slay after immersing himself in the scene and its people. The two genres share a musical history in Jungle and toasting, and as Slay explained in an interview with UKF, D&B offers MCs a chance to be booked for raves and perform to a crowd. From hosting huge raves to writing openly on the love of his son, Slay seems willing to explore everything the genre has to offer and has made some major contributions to UK D&B in just a few short years.
An essential part of the Manchester Sound, Slay really is a ‘Badman MC’, above anything else and regardless of bpm or style. A committed and independent artist who continues to create music based on vibes rather than its capability to go viral.
DOGGER:
Rob “Dogger” Smith is a multidisciplinary British artist whose career spans professional
skateboarding, drum & bass production, DJ performance, Venue Operations, Event Curation and analogue-driven visual art. After a 12-year stint in London, he’s back on home turf in Manchester. Dogger has built a reputation for blending street culture, musicality and visual storytelling into a unique and authentic creative identity, with a focus on craftsmanship and cross-genre creativity in his music, visual art and skateboarding.
In music, Dogger has emerged as one of the most soulful and versatile producers in modern drum & bass, releasing on labels such as 1985 Music, DnB Allstars, UKF, The North Quarter, V Recordings, Shogun Audio and Hospital Records, as well as founding the creative imprint Precinct, Dogger's productions have had 4 million Spotify streams in 2025 alone. Frequently
collaborating with musical partner Mindstate and long-time friend MC DRS both in the studio and on stage, his sound blends live instrumentation, groove-driven rhythms and emotive song writing, reflecting his background as both a drummer and a lifelong student of underground music culture.
As a touring DJ, Dogger has taken his musical identity far beyond the UK, building an international reputation for emotionally rich, technically refined drum & bass sets. His performances are known for balancing deep musicality with lively energy — a style that has made him a favourite across underground club nights at legendary venues such as Fabric (London) and Gretchen (Berlin), as well as major festival stages including Glastonbury, Boomtown, and international festivals such as Northern Bass (Auckland), Movement (Detroit), and regular appearances at Sardinia’s Sun & Bass.
A former pro rider for Death Skateboards, and sponsored by brands such as Monster Energy, Carhartt, and VANS Dogger grew up documenting skateboarding on Hi-8 cameras from the age of 13, laying the foundations for the filmmaking style he is known for today. His analogue-inspired video production now creates distinctive music videos shot on tape, edited using traditional methods and finished through a hybrid digitisation process — a signature aesthetic that has become part of his artistic fingerprint. He has frequently shot videos with artists such as Children of Zeus, Chimpo, Riko Dan, Killa P and Trigga.
As A&R Manager at DnB Allstars, he plays a key role in shaping the sound and future direction of one of the most influential brands in modern drum & bass. Known for his deep musical instincts and ear for emotionally driven, forward-thinking production, Rob brings both artistic sensitivity and cultural experience to the label’s signing and development process.
Today, Rob “Dogger” Smith stands at the crossroads of multiple disciplines — a producer, curator and skater whose work carries the same hand-crafted, analogue, community-driven ethos that has defined him since childhood. Whether behind the decks, behind the camera or behind a cultural
institution, Dogger continues to push underground creativity forward with authenticity and heart.
